Musical Director - Major Glen Jones MMus, BA (Hons), Dip Mus (Open), ATCL

Glen Jones was appointed Musical Director of the British Airways Brass Band in September 2009.

In his professional life, Glen is the Deputy Chief Instructor at the Royal Military School of Music, a post he has held since October 2008.

After a rewarding career in the band of the Grenadier Guards as a clarinettist, Glen was selected for the Student Bandmaster’s course at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall in 1997.  On completion of this course, he won a number of prizes including the Worshipful Company of Musicians prize for the best overall student bandmaster, gaining a first class honours degree.

After a number of posts as a bandmaster, Glen was commissioned in 2005 and was appointed as the Director of Music for the Band of the Parachute Regiment, located in Colchester.

As a conductor, Glen has been fortunate to work with various bands and choirs around the country, including Bournemouth Concert Brass, one of the south’s leading brass bands.  As a composer, his work Toccata features in the music engraving software programme, Sibelius.  And more recently, as the Musical Director for the army’s 2009 contemporary Rhythm Force concert, Glen composed the opening number for this event which was headlined by the world renowned TV presenter and jazz musician, Jools Holland.

Band Master and Drum Major - Francis (Fred) Harman

Francis (Fred) Harman followed his father’s footsteps into army music at the age of 15.  Following 2 years at the Junior Musician’s Wing, Pirbright, he then completed a one year course at Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music.  Fred then joined The Band of The Life Guards in 1967 and spent 22 years playing percussion and rising to the rank of W0II Band Corporal Major by the age of 29.  During this time he performed in most of the major concert halls around the world and also took part in numerous TV, radio and recording sessions.

Apart from Military music, Fred performed with some of the major civilian orchestras including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and for a few years with Musical Director for HAODS (the Henley-on-Thames Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society).  After leaving the army in 1989, he joined British Airways and soon ventured into the world of Brass Bands.  In 2001 Fred was appointed Band Master of the British Airways Band and his responsibilities include conducting the Band in the absence of the Director of Music, rehearsing and organising engagements for the British Airways ‘B’ Band and acting as Drum Major during the main British Airways Band’s marching engagements.

Principal Cornet - Paul Douglas

Paul Douglas was born in Southampton, England and began playing the trumpet at the age of seven. As he progressed through his school years he played with various school/youth orchestras and a brass band.

Shortly after leaving school Paul joined the army as a military musician with the Royal Hampshire Regiment (his County regiment). During his military service he spent a year training at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall. Paul also served in Germany, Northern Ireland and was part of the first garrison on the Falkland Islands in the immediate aftermath of the war.

Paul joined the British Airways Band in 1986 and subsequently became Principal Cornet player at the end of 2005.
